Why moody edits fail on phones

Phone cameras brighten shadows aggressively in software. When you then pull exposure down to create mood, you are darkening data that has already been flattened, so it turns muddy and grey instead of deep.

Fix the shadows, not the exposure

Leave exposure roughly where it is. Pull the shadows and black point down instead, then recover the subject with a radial mask. Mood should come from the frame, not from the whole image being dark.

• Shadows minus 20 to minus 35
• Blacks minus 10 to minus 25
• Radial mask on the subject, plus 0.3 exposure

Desaturate selectively

Global saturation down reads as a dull photo. Drop only the colours competing with your subject, usually greens and yellows, and keep one accent alive.

Tip. In colour mix, minus 30 on green saturation does more for mood than minus 15 global.

Keep one bright area

Every moody image needs somewhere for the eye to rest: a sky patch, a window, a face. Without it the photo reads as underexposed rather than atmospheric.
